How to Prepare Your HVAC for an Indiana Winter

Indiana winters are no joke. Temperatures regularly drop below freezing, and your heating system needs to be ready to handle months of heavy use. A little preparation in the fall can prevent expensive breakdowns when you need heat the most.

Start with your air filter. A dirty filter forces your system to work harder, reduces airflow, and can cause overheating. Replace it before winter starts, and check it monthly during heavy use.

Have your system inspected by a professional before the cold arrives. A technician can check refrigerant levels, inspect electrical connections, test the thermostat, and identify worn components before they fail. This is exactly what our 2-Year Service Plan covers — scheduled maintenance visits that catch problems early.

Check your vents and registers throughout the house. Make sure none are blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Blocked vents create pressure imbalances that make your system work harder and heat unevenly.

If your home has a heat pump, make sure the outdoor unit is clear of debris, leaves, and anything that could obstruct airflow. Check that the defrost cycle is working properly.

Taking these steps before temperatures drop can save you from a breakdown on the coldest night of the year. If you'd rather have a professional handle it, give us a call.
